Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2022

Sunday, January 23,  2022

The problem is that sometimes we do not know what we need to ask for in prayer, but the spirit itself pleads for us with unspoken regrets (Rom. 8:26).

When you pray to Jehovah to vent, it is important that you also think about all the good things you have despite your problems and that you thank him for them. There will be times when it will be difficult for you to find the right words to express your intense emotions. But remember that Jehovah can answer you even if you only go so far as to say: "Please help me!" (2 Chron. 18:31). Trust Jehovah, not yourself. In the eighth century BC, the people of Judah were so afraid of being attacked by the Assyrians and of becoming their slaves that they turned to Egypt for help (Isa. 30: 1, 2). Jehovah warned them that such a path would lead to disaster. --Is. 30: 7, 12, 13. Through Isaiah, Jehovah told his people how to find authentic protection. Isaiah said:"Your strength will depend on your staying calm and showing confidence" in Jehovah (Isa. 30: 15b). w21.01 3, 4 paras. 8, 9

How can we benefit from studying the bad examples of those who did not remain calm and did not trust Jehovah?

We can also draw lessons from the bad examples of those who did not remain calm and did not trust Jehovah. Studying these examples will help us avoid stumbling over the same stone as them. For example, early in his reign, King Asa of Judah trusted in Jehovah when faced with a huge army, and he blessed him with victory (2 Chron. 14: 9-12). But what happened later, when he had to face King Baasa of Israel, who had a much smaller army? Instead of turning to Jehovah as he had done in the past, he paid the Syrians to help him. --2 Chron. 16: 1-3. And when he became seriously ill and his death was near, he did not turn to Jehovah for help. --2 Chron. 16:12.

What can we learn from Asa's mistakes?

In the beginning, Asa sought out Jehovah when he was in trouble. But over time he stopped turning to his God for help and preferred to do things his own way. At first glance, Asa's idea of asking Syrians for help in fighting Israel might seem like a good plan. But in the long run it didn't work out. Jehovah told him through a prophet: “By trusting in the king of Syria and not trusting in Jehovah your God, the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hands.” - 2 Chron. 16: 7. We too must be careful not to rely so much on our way of doing things that we do not seek Jehovah's help in his Word. Sometimes we will be presented with situations where we have to make quick decisions. Still, we will do well if we remain calm and trust Jehovah.
