Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2021

Friday, December 24, 2021

We work day and night so that we are not a financial burden on any of you (2 Thess. 3: 8).

The apostle Paul stayed with Aquila and Priscilla in Corinth and "worked with them," since "their trade was to make tents." Just because he said he worked "day and night" does not mean that he did not stop. For example, he took advantage of Saturdays to preach to the Jews, who did not work that day either (Acts 13: 14-16, 42-44; 16:13; 18: 1-4). Although he had to work, he made sure to participate regularly “in the holy work of the good news of God” (Rom. 15:16; 2 Cor. 11:23). He encouraged others to do the same as him. Consequently, Aquila and Priscilla were his "co-workers in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 12:11; 16: 3). Paul advised the Corinthians to "be very busy in the Lord's work" (1 Cor. 15:58; 2 Cor. 9: 8). And he wrote by inspiration: "If anyone does not want to work, let him not eat either" (2 Thess. 3:10). w19.12 5 pars. 12, 13.

How does Mark 6: 30-34 show that Jesus was balanced about work and rest?

It is important to be balanced when it comes to work. King Solomon wrote by inspiration that "there is a certain time [...] for each activity," and mentioned among other things planting, building, crying, laughing and dancing (Eccl. 3: 1-8). It is clear that work and rest are two fundamental aspects of life. Jesus saw the two with balance. On one occasion, the apostles returned from a preaching tour. They were so busy that they "didn't even have time to eat." Jesus said to them: “Come with me; We are going alone to a secluded place so that they can rest a little ”(read Mark 6: 30-34). Neither he nor his disciples always got all they wanted. But Jesus knew that all of them needed to rest.

How will studying the law of the Sabbath help us?

Sometimes it takes a little rest or a change of activity. This is demonstrated by a command that Jehovah gave the Israelites in the Law of Moses: they were to keep the weekly Sabbath. We are not under the Mosaic Law, but we can take advantage of studying what it said about the Sabbath. What we learn will help us analyze how we view work and rest.

According to Exodus 31: 12-15, what were the Israelites to do on the Sabbath?

God's Word says that after six “days” Jehovah stopped doing creative works on earth (Gen. 2: 2). However, Jehovah likes to work, so he has continued to do so in other ways. --John 5:17. The Sabbath law followed a pattern similar to that described in Genesis, that is, work six days and rest on the seventh. God said that the Sabbath was a sign between him and Israel. It was a day “of complete rest” and “holy to Jehovah” (read Exodus 31: 12-15). Everyone was forbidden to work, including children and slaves. They couldn't even work the domestic animals (Ex. 20:10). This allowed the Israelites to give more attention to spiritual matters.
