Let's Examine the Scriptures Every Day 2021

Sunday, October 17, 2021

Jehovah is merciful and compassionate. He will not be continually pointing out our faults nor will he be forever resentful (Ps. 103: 8, 9).

Jeremiah wrote the book that bears his name and probably the books of 1 and 2 Kings as well. Undoubtedly, thanks to this assignment, he saw how merciful Jehovah is to imperfect human beings. For example, he learned that when King Ahab repented of his wrongdoings, Jehovah said that he would not witness the annihilation of his entire family. --1 Kings 21: 27-29. He also learned that although Manasseh offended Jehovah much more than Ahab, Jehovah forgave him when he repented. —2 Kings 21:16, 17; 2 Chron. 33: 10-13. These stories must have helped Jeremiah to imitate God's patience and mercy. Consider what Jeremiah did when his friend Baruch was distracted for a time from his work. Instead of writing him off, Jeremiah helped him by conveying Jehovah's frank but loving message. --Jer. 45: 1-5. w19.11 6 pars. 14, 15

According to what Proverbs 17:17 says, what can we do when a brother suffers?

Today, our brothers face countless difficulties. For example, many suffer the effects of natural disasters or man-made disasters. In those cases, perhaps some of us can welcome these brothers into our home. Others may be able to help financially. But what we can all do is ask Jehovah to help them. If we learn that a sibling is discouraged, we may not know what to say to him or how to react. But we can all do a lot. For example, we can spend time with him, listen carefully to him when he speaks to us, and mention a text that comforts us (Isa. 50: 4). The most important thing is that we stand by our friends when they need us (read Proverbs 17:17).

How will the friendships we make now help us in the future?

We must be determined to make and maintain strong friendships with our brothers now. Why? Because our enemies will try to separate us with their lies and misinformation. They will try to stop us from supporting and trusting each other. But they will fail. They will not be able to break the bonds of love that bind us. Nothing you do will end the friendships we have forged. In fact, these friendships will last not just until the end of this world, but all eternity.
