You, O Jehovah, are good and willing to forgive (Ps. 86:5).

Since Jehovah is our Creator, he knows everything about us. Isn't it impressive to think that he knows every single person who lives on this planet in detail? (Ps. 139:15-17). So he can see all the imperfections we have inherited from our parents. And that's not all. He is aware of each of the experiences that have influenced our way of being. What does Jehovah do with all this information? Knowing us so deeply prompts him to show us mercy (Ps. 78:39; 103:13, 14). Jehovah has shown that he wants to forgive us. He understands very well that because of what the first man, Adam, did, the curse of sin and death fell upon us all (Rom. 5:12). And there was nothing we could do to free ourselves or anyone else from this curse (Ps. 49:7-9). But God felt compassion and did something to free us. As explained in John 3:16, out of love Jehovah sent his only begotten Son to die for us (Matt. 20:28; Rom. 5:19). w22.06 3 paras. 5, 6.

Name some Bible figures whom Jehovah generously forgave.

The Bible tells of many people whom Jehovah generously forgave.—Eph. 4:32. Do you remember any case? You may be thinking of King Manasseh. He was very evil and committed very serious sins against Jehovah. He promoted the worship of false gods and burned his own children in fire as a sacrifice to these gods. And he even had the nerve to put an idol in the temple of Jehovah, a holy place. The Bible says of him: “He did on a large scale what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him” (2 Chron. 33:2-7). But when Manasseh showed that he was truly repentant, Jehovah generously forgave him and even allowed him to become king again. (2 Chron. 33:12, 13) Another case that might come to mind is that of King David, who fell into serious sins such as adultery and murder. But when David recognized his mistakes and repented from the heart, Jehovah also forgave him (2 Sam. 12:9, 10, 13, 14). So we can be sure that Jehovah really wants to forgive. And, as we will see below, Jehovah's forgiveness is very different from that of human beings.

Why is Jehovah the best judge of all, and how does that influence his forgiveness?

Jehovah is “the Judge of all the earth” (Gen. 18:25). A good judge has to know the laws thoroughly. And Jehovah meets that requirement because he is not only our Judge, but also our Lawgiver (Isa. 33:22). No one knows how to distinguish what is right from what is wrong like Jehovah. What other requirements must a good judge meet? Before passing sentence, he must be able to take into account all the important factors of a case. In this sense, there is no one as qualified to be a judge as Jehovah.

What information does Jehovah have when deciding whether or not to forgive someone?

Jehovah is not like human judges. He always knows perfectly all the factors that influence the cases that come before him (Gen. 18:20, 21; Ps. 90:8). He does not judge based only on what human beings see and hear. He understands very well how a person's actions are influenced by their DNA, their upbringing, their environment, and their mental and emotional state. Furthermore, Jehovah reads hearts, meaning he understands our motivations, intentions, and desires. He doesn't miss a single detail; everything is exposed before his eyes (Heb. 4:13). So Jehovah's forgiveness is based on a deep understanding of each situation.

Why can we say that Jehovah's decisions are always just? (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Jehovah's decisions are always just. He is completely impartial. His forgiveness never depends on a person's appearance, financial situation, social position, or abilities (1 Sam. 16:7; James 2:1-4). Jehovah cannot be pressured or bribed (2 Chron. 19:7). And he does not give in to frustration or feelings (Ex. 34:7). Without a doubt, Jehovah is the best Judge there is because his understanding of us and our circumstances is perfect. (Read Deuteronomy 32:4.)
